The world first pop-up event of the designer behind the all too famous heel-less shoes adorning the feet of Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness- Noritaka Tatehana, is opening in Japan. From July 31st to August 13th on the the 2nd floor of Isetan Shinjuku.
All shoes will be made and sold to order. Tatehana will be at the shop in person for fitting from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on August 3rd and 10th. The event will also see the debut of Tatehana’s new sneaker brand “THE DAUGHTERS”, and sneakers for men and women will be on presale at Isetan to mark this release.
To set the stage for the event, a selection of 15 or so of Tatehana’s works which are normally part of gallery collections will be on display from July 24th, in art frames on the 2nd floor of Isetan main building. Tatehana says of his first pop-up event, “My perception of fashion is communication. Appearances reflect what lies on the inside, and the use of fashion as a medium of expression is always a fresh sensation. I hope the event serves as an initial, sensory experience for people.”
His most famous work has enchanted celebrities over the globe with its unique motif, a modern reinterpretation of “pokkuri-geta” or elevated clogs of courtesans (mainly of the Edo era) known as “oiran”. Versions are now part of the permanent artwork collection at the Museum at FIT and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Tatehana explains, “Japan is constantly at the heart of my creations. I did research in my student years of classical dyeing techniques like Yuzen dyes and that lead me to believe in the importance of focusing on the present. By focusing on present day life we become sensitive to the history behind us. Likewise it is meaningful to pay attention to daily details that tend to pass us by because that is where numerous hints are hidden. I see the creation of new values as being based on classical Japanese identity and the interpretation of our modern era.”
Tatehana was born in Tokyo in 1985 and raised in Kamakura. By 15 he was a self-educated clothes producer, joining Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006 to study dyes. Upon graduation in 2010, he opened his maison “NORITAKA TATEHANA” and its collection. The same year, he personally sold himself into Lady Gaga and landed the position of her exclusive shoemaker. Tatehana has appeared in Fashion Week in Paris, New York and Japan. Since 2010, he has been designing shoes for the SOMARTA collection, has held exhibitions at COMME des GARÇONS stores in and out of Japan and also at the “SHOW STUDIO London” hosted by Nick Knight.
