CoSTUME NATIONAL is holding contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto’s exhibit “Architecture of Time” at art gallery “LAB” located in its Minami-Aoyama flagship store. From Oct 19 to Jan 13, 2014.

On display is Sugimoto’s acclaimed “Architecture” series in which worldwide landmark modern architectures are blurred in monotone. While the conventional camera can focus at infinity at its furthest, Sugimoto pushed the focal length out to double the infinity. The results are completely blurred structures with details melted away. Only the essence of the architecture remains, just as the human memory preserves images.

The exhibit celebrates the European Tour of “Sugimoto Bunraku, Sonezaki Shinju-The Love Suicides at Sonezaki” sponsored by CoSTUME NATIONAL. Sugimoto revived the 18th century ningyo-joruri puppet theater play by Chikamatsu Monzaemon which was banned under the Tokugawa Shogunate after love suicides became a social phenomenon. Premiered in Kanagawa Arts Theater in March 2011, the play will visit Rome, Madrid, and Paris.
