Christian Bonnefoi, one of the artists representing France, opens his first solo exhibit in Japan. From Dec 13 at Ginza Maison Hermes FORUM.

The exhibit is a small scale retrospective, introducing the artist’s masterpieces including “Babel,” “Eureka,” “Dos” and his latest artworks. The layout of the venue was designed by young architect Hideyuki Nakayama. The white walls of the space bring out the charms of each of the artworks.

Bonnefoi was born in Salindres, France in 1948. He started his career as an art historian. However, moved by the sculpture “Dos” by Matisse at the Henri Matisse Exhibition held at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1970, he decided to become an artist. While influenced by Support/Surface, an art movement in France at the end of the 60s, he created self-standing objet using transparent materials by directing his attention to the physical aspects of paintings. In the past, he held exhibitions at Pompidou Centre, Musee Matisse and others.
