Japan’s famed department store group Isetan Mitsukoshi is participating in this year’s Japan Expo, taking place from July 7 to 10 in Paris. At the Expo, Isetan Mitsukoshi will promote its new store named “The Japan Store Isetan Mitsukoshi Paris” to open in October within Maison de la Culture du Japon.
The new store will operate under the concept of proposing products which represent the reality of Japan to the rest of the world. The Japan Store Isetan Mitsukoshi Paris plans to introduce pop-up events throughout the year, with the first being an event about Japanese tea.
The exhibit at Japan Expo applies the tea theme, with a showcasing of Japanese tea boxes and Japanese staff clad in kimono serving non-alcoholic green tea cocktails.
A tea box in the same size as those presented by Sen no Rikyu, a historical figure that has had a great influence on Japanese tea culture, and another, using pieces of wood that were left over from the renovation of the Taian teahouse within the Myokian temple located in Kyoto, are being displayed. Both traditional wood and modern acrylic are used to express the fusion of the past and present.
A display of yukatas styled under the theme, “fusion of modern and classic”, by Tokyo-based fashion director/journalist Misha Janette is also available. Under the direction of Janette, obi sashes are transformed into turbans, high-heeled shoes and sunglasses accessorize the looks, and the yukatas themselves become stylish coats over dresses and jeans.
The opening day of Japan Expo falls under the Japanese star festival, Tanabata, and visitors of Isetan Mitsukoshi’s booth during the Japan Expo period will be presented with strips of paper hanging from bamboo leaves to write their wishes on, which will be sent back to Tokyo, to be displayed at the Hanazono Shrine located in front of Isetan Shinjuku department store.
