What is Evangelion?

Neon Genesis Evangelion, or just Evangelion for short, is an anime TV series created by Gainex and Tatsunoko Productions and was broadcast from October 1995 to March 1996. Evangelion’s themes fall under the “mecha” and post-apocalyptic genres. The series is set in a futuristic Tokyo, fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm. Evangelion is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed anime series of the 1990s, which has since skyrocketed in popularity, creating a strong demand for merchandise and fashion apparel. The series can be considered a part of what makes up “Cool Japan,” which consists of other pop culture mainstays like One Piece and Hello Kitty.

Collaborations with Evangelion

Due to the large number of Evangelion followers, there are no shortage of collaborations with artists and fashion brands. Jewelry brand The Kiss created a special set of silver rings and a necklace for romantically-inclined fans, and quite often limited print graphic T-shirts pop up in select stores around Tokyo’s fashion areas featuring collaborations like Cospa, Dragon76, and even Hello Kitty, among others.
