Who Is Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake, widely considered to be the most internationally famous Japanese Designer, was born in April 22, 1938, in Hiroshima, Japan. After studying art in college he worked in New York and Paris before finally returning to Tokyo in 1970 where he founded his own design studio that produced high-end woman’s fashion. What Miyake is well-known for is combining technology and fashion in various ways. This even caught the attention of Steve Jobs, whose iconic Black turtleneck sweater is created by Miyake.

Collaborations with Issey Miyake

One of the biggest collaborators with Issey Miyake was the photographer Irving Penn, who 1983 worked on an assignment for Vogue magazine taking pictures of Miyake’s fashion line. The designer so loved the style and direction of the photography that he partnered with Penn for the next 13 years. Other notable collaborations have been with art director Ikko Tanaka and author Kazuko Koike. Within the fashion industry Miyake has recently teamed up with the Canadian shoe brand Native for a line of eco-friendly rubber shoes and has also collaborated on special projects with Shiseido and Seiko.
