Comme des Garçons, which translated to “Like Boys” in French, is a Japanese fashion Label founded by the leading fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and specializes in apparel, accessories, and perfumes. The company is based in Tokyo and Paris and staffs four head designers, Junya Watanabe, Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu, and Rei Kawakubo. The label was created in 1969 and officially established as a company in 1973. After a few years of success, Comme des Garçons launched their menswear line and three years later debuted in Paris, France. The brand was a pioneer in making white and monotone fashion a trend in 1980s Japan, and has since become famous around the world through celebrities like Dennis Hopper and Robert De Niro.
Comme des Garçons has collaborated a lot with artists and brands over the years. They have created fragrances with artists Tracy Emin and Pharrell Williams, teamed up with Walt Disney and Star Wars, and created fashion lines with H&M, United Arrows, and Yoshida Kaban. Also, in 1991, the brand collaborated on a men’s fashion show with the high-end designer Yohji Yamamoto.
Much like the Western high-fashion brands Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garçons offers a variety of products such as fragrances, apparel, and jewelry. If you enjoy any of these brands, then check out the Japanese designers Issey Miyake and Kansai Yamamoto, and the fine jeweler Mikimoto.
There are many Comme des Garçons stores throughout Ometasando, each offering different variations of the company’s product lineups. In Jingmae, you will find stores catering toward the casual crowd, and in Aoyama and Ginza you will find many of the high-end labels the company has to offer. A great feature of Comme des Garçons' design team is that they do not limit themselves to just one style, but offer apparel for a broad range of customers from fast fashion to luxury.
